FIELD SERVICE ENGINEERNORTH WEST OF ENGLAND

LEWIS CLEVELAND

Field service engineer, maker, coach and incurable thread-puller.

This is my digital workshop. The things I build, fix, learn, use, watch, coach, photograph and occasionally become completely obsessed with. Some of it is finished. Most of it isn't.

Fix things. Build things. Learn things. Preferably in that order. Occasionally not.

The desk this gets built at: two screens, one showing the lewiscleveland.uk home page and the other a code editor, a pegboard of aviation photographs and drawings behind, a Canon body and a sketchbook of wireframes on the desk, stacked books labelled field service, netball, ice hockey, photography, woodwork and web development, and a cat asleep on the chair

Apparently the website needed a page about building the website. We're through the looking glass now.

There is no shortage of information in field service. Turning it into something a human can act on before the next job is the actual work.

03 / WEBSITES

Websites & Digital Projects

Somewhere along the way, building things stopped meaning only physical things.

I've started creating websites and digital tools for small businesses, clubs and people I know. I enjoy taking something that already has personality in the real world and making sure its website actually reflects it. No generic templates. No making every business look identical. Just figuring out what makes something different and building around that.

The Future We Were Promised

There is something about the 1950s that has always sung to me. Not the decade itself — their idea of the future, and the confidence that somebody would go and build it.

Websites With a Personality

Can small businesses escape the template, subscription and sameness trap? An experiment in websites that feel like the business and actually belong to it.

06 / INFLUENCES

People, Machines & Ideas That Shaped Me

Nobody builds themselves from scratch.

Somewhere along the way you borrow a way of thinking from someone, become obsessed with a machine, watch somebody solve a problem differently, read a book at exactly the right time or discover something that sends your brain off in a completely new direction.

07 / OFF THE CLOCK

OFF THE CLOCK

Two sports, one habit. Turn up, be useful, and then start quietly redesigning something nobody asked you to redesign.

Sport is where most of my volunteering, photography, design and club systems work ends up. It is also the only part of my life where somebody blows a whistle at me, which is probably good for me.

ICE HOCKEY

Ice Hockey

Hockey has been part of my life since I was a kid in Bracknell.

NETBALL

Netball

I started as a parent trying to help his daughter keep playing. I stayed because I fell in love with coaching.

Field Service

Making useful information easier to reach while working in the field.

PROBLEMTechnical information is written to be read at a desk. You need it standing next to a machine, one-handed, on a gym floor, with a customer watching.
IDEAMake the information findable from where the work actually happens. Search that understands error codes and part numbers, answers short enough to read on a phone, and no forty-page PDF between you and the one paragraph you need.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXTStill a thought. It keeps coming back, which usually means something.
