Four Months Fixing What Happens After the Screen Goes Black

After more than a decade at Sky, I moved into something that felt familiar enough to use everything I'd learned, but different enough to make me learn again.
I became a Field Engineer with Craigavon TV Service Centre, covering television repairs in customers' homes.
It was only four months.
But it gave me another perspective on field service, fault diagnosis and what it actually means to repair something rather than simply replace it.
From TV Service to TV Repair
I'd spent years working with the technology surrounding the television.
Now I was opening the television itself.
My role involved travelling to customers' homes to diagnose and repair TVs, ranging from relatively straightforward faults through to board replacements and screen repairs.
That distinction mattered.
This wasn't:
It doesn't work, replace it.
It was:
It doesn't work. Why?
And that's the bit I enjoy.
A symptom is only where the investigation starts.
The real task is finding the root cause and working out the most appropriate, efficient and cost-effective way of putting it right.
Diagnosis Before Parts
One of the biggest parts of the job was accurate diagnosis.
Modern televisions contain several interconnected systems, which means the component appearing to cause the problem isn't necessarily the component responsible for it.
So the process was methodical.
Understand the customer's description.
Inspect the television.
Test.
Eliminate possibilities.
Identify the fault.
Decide whether it could be repaired safely and effectively in the customer's home.
Then repair it properly.
Sometimes that meant replacing a board.
Sometimes it meant carrying out a screen repair.
Sometimes the diagnosis showed that the job needed something more than could realistically be done in someone's living room.
And that's where another part of field engineering becomes important:
knowing when not to keep going.
When the Living Room Isn't a Workshop
Not every repair belonged in the customer's home.
If the television couldn't be repaired onsite, I arranged for it to be collected and transferred to the workshop, coordinating with the workshop team so they had the information needed to continue the repair.
That handover had to be accurate.
What was the reported problem?
What had I found?
What had already been tested?
What needed further investigation?
And while all of that was happening behind the scenes, there was still somebody waiting for their television back.
So keeping the customer informed of the repair status was part of the job too.
It's something field service has repeatedly taught me:
Representing More Than One Company
Working for Craigavon also meant representing major clients, including Domestic & General and John Lewis.
When I arrived at a customer's home, they weren't particularly interested in the complicated relationships between service providers, clients and repair networks.
They just knew somebody had arrived to fix their television.
And that person was me.
That meant meeting the service standards expected by both Craigavon and its clients while giving the customer a professional, courteous experience.
Explain what I'd found.
Explain what happened next.
Answer their questions.
Manage expectations.
And communicate the outcome accurately.
After ten years in customers' homes with Sky, those skills were very familiar.
The technology had changed.
The responsibility at the front door hadn't.
The Repair Doesn't End When the Screwdriver Goes Away
There is another side of field engineering that customers rarely see.
Documentation.
Every repair required a detailed service report recording things such as the work completed, parts used, time spent and customer feedback.
That information needed to be submitted promptly and accurately because it fed into billing, reporting and communication with clients.
It's not the glamorous bit.
Nobody makes dramatic 1950s posters of a heroic engineer completing a service report at 4:47pm. ๐
But it's incredibly important.
A good field-service operation needs to know what actually happened in the field.
If the information coming back from engineers is poor, everything downstream becomes harder.
The Van Matters Too
Once again, my van wasn't simply transport.
It was effectively a mobile parts store and workshop.
I was responsible for managing my inventory of spare parts and tools, making sure I had what I needed and reporting shortages before they caused unnecessary delays.
It's something I've encountered throughout my field-service career.
Having the right technical ability means very little if the part you need is sitting on a shelf somewhere else.
Good stock management isn't really about counting boxes.
It's about increasing the chance that the engineer can finish the job while they're standing in front of it.
That's an idea that has stayed with me.
Repair Safely or Don't Repair It
Working inside electrical equipment also meant that safety couldn't become an afterthought.
I followed the appropriate safety protocols and repair standards, while keeping my knowledge of repair techniques, tools and procedures current.
There is always pressure in field service to get something working.
But there is a more important requirement:
Get it working properly and safely.
If that can't be achieved in the customer's home, the correct solution isn't a shortcut.
It's getting the equipment into an environment where the repair can be completed properly.
A Short Chapter With a Familiar Theme
My time at Craigavon lasted from June to September 2024, just four months.
But it sits neatly within the wider story of my career.
At Sky I'd learned to diagnose systems.
At Craigavon, I was diagnosing down to the components inside the product.
I was still travelling.
Still carrying tools.
Still managing stock.
Still entering customers' homes.
Still documenting what I'd done.
Still representing a company at someone's front door.
Still learning.
But I was applying those skills to an entirely different piece of technology.
And that reinforced something I've come to believe about engineering.
Knowing one product inside out is useful.
Knowing how to approach something you don't yet understand is much more valuable.
Find the Fault. Understand It. Fix It Properly.
Those four months gave me hands-on experience with another side of electronics repair and another field-service operation.
More importantly, they reinforced the way I like to work.
Don't guess.
Don't fire parts at a problem.
Understand what's happening.
Find the root cause.
Use the right tools.
Make the repair properly.
Document what happened.
Look after the customer.
Then move onto the next problem.
The equipment has changed several times throughout my career.
That approach hasn't.
